It’s been 6 months since my “This Is My Rifle” column first made it’s debut right here on RefinedHype and I can honestly say my life will never be the same. When Nathan S. first approached me about writing a column for the site, I was excited but at the same time I was nervous about sharing my personal opinions, since I am an artist and my not-so-popular theories could alienate potential fans of my music. Being an artist and also a person with a strong sense of values and principles can be a hard thing to balance at times because you always find yourself walking the fine-line between what’s best for you personally and what’s best for your career. You have to be careful of what you say and do publicly because if you push too much against public opinion you run the risk of doing irreversible damage to your career.
So needless to say, this entire column was a gamble for me. Since I’m still in the “working my way up” phase of my career, most artists in my position would be as delicate as humanly possible. Minimal personality, maximum agreeability is what I call it. But I, on the other hand, decided to do the opposite; I threw caution to the wind and let the crazy come all the way out. To say that I’m ecstatic to have come across so many intelligent people who have embraced the column is an understatement. Whether you agree with me or not, I appreciate every single comment, email, tweet and facebook message I receive in regards to both my music and the articles.
One commenter in particular has taken on the role of being my intellectual rival. He is the Boston Red Sox to my New York Yankees. From fact checking to correcting grammatical errors, he’s made sure that I am 100% on-point every single week, and if not, he’s made sure that I and everybody else reading knows about it. Last week he made the observation that I always sound angry and rather than point out what’s wrong with the world, I should devote more of my time to finding ways to fix it.
I'm a fan of real hip hop culture, the hip hop that started in the Bronx. I went to college in the Bronx and spent a lot of time taking in the underground scene (seeing MCs like Pack FM and Immortal Technique battle every weekend it seemed). I wrote my thesis on the gang culture in the Bronx (Black Spades before they were the Zulu Nation) that preceded the birth of the hip hop…so yes, I live and breathe it.

While Shane Eli's new album, I Can Do Better, has been pushed back from its original date, the L.A. rapper/producer has released new single, Let's Ride, to tide fans over. .
Let’s Ride deploys a loop from Marlena Shaw’s Where Can I Go as the background for the headliner's opening verse, while ATL-based collaborators Playboy Tre details some auto-erotic activity on the middle, and White Jesus emcee Rittz finishes with a characteristically blistering staccato flow.
Shane Eli's sophomore album, I Can Do Better, hosted by DJ Skee and presented by Flud Watches, drops soon via DJBooth.net. Features include Rittz, Aleon Craft, Playboy Tre, Jason Caesar, Ahmad and more.
Jersey Demic provides visuals for his third single off the 'Rat Race' album. This song is a tribute to New Jersey which was directed and edited by Dwayne Henry. Artist cameos include: Daddy Bawsten, Rado, and Jay Chordz. You can purchase "Salute Jersey" here -
First off greetings to all of my cool people. Peace sign and salute to all. The topic I wanted to briefly cover with this post is music artist and their lanes. By lanes I mean there main subject matter or focus when it comes to their line of work. As an upcoming artist myself I do feel that it is important to distinguish your own personal sound and key in on the main type of music that you would like to be known for but it doesn't stop there. Just like fashion and entertainment music goes through fads and nothing that stays the same will remain relevant forever. With that said I honestly feel that any artist should put as much time as they do trying to perfect their main sound into trying to expand their sound at the same time.

This has been a song that I've been listening to alot over the past couple of days, if you haven't checked out his mixtape, you need to make sure you check it out.
What's going on everybody this is Shod Harris, founder of Revolution Media Group. After a pretty hectic week, I've finally have some chill time so I thought it would be a good idea to write this blog of something I been noticing (I'm a very observant dude, I see it all lol). I try to write something to help independent artists out, and this is something that could benefit artists. I've noticed that a lot of artists are putting out projects, but either they are real lazy or they really just don't give a fuck about what they are doing because the overall quality of what they are doing is horrible. And I'm not even talking about lyrics but I am referring to everything else as far as sound quality, videos, cover art, and everything else in between. To me that's a major problem. How can other people take what you call your "craft" seriously when you don’t?
Rhyming over industry beats is too easy for Gees Extortion so he decided to take it back a little and take a flow not many emcees can duplicate. That said, check out his freestyle over Eric B. & Rakim's "Know the Ledge" from the cult classic movie Juice.
Two of Norfolk Virginia's heavy hitters, teamed up for a monstrous street record entitled "I Deserve This". Leader of the new school A. Driver ( @adriversfr ) & hometown hero/favorite FamLay ( @hitmybeeper ) lyrically muscle their way through the Sean Young ( @IAmSeanYoung ) produced track for the internet blogosphere and beyond to enjoy. With artists as such, there's no question as to what the 757 has in store for the world in the months to come!
