Before I even get started my ADHD is really kicking in right now, I can’t stay focused on one thing for too long. So now that I have given that little disclosure let’s get on with this blog. Have you ever wondered why certain artists who have all of the talent in the world don’t really sell units nor have a very strong fan base? I used to wonder that all the time. There are artists out there that I truly think are lyrical monsters but they never make the big splash that they are supposed to. A couple of artists come to mind like Fabolous, Jadakiss and Ludacris. You might say that all of these artists are platinum selling artists, which you are right but at the same time, how many of their albums do you have in your collection, and be honest and I’m talking about albums that you have purchased.
It really makes you think, like why are these great artists not getting the true respect that they deserve and really it comes down to their lack of creating a true BRAND. By definition a brand is the identity or personality of a specific product, service or business. To even break that down a little bit further in my own words, I feel you have to relate to that artist in some way where the listener feels they have a bond with that artist. In the entertainment industry, an entertainers’ brand allows companies to decide if they want to sponsor that person for their company and if you don’t know what that means, it means ENDORSEMENTS.
There are some artists who have created strong brands through their music, interviews, and whatever else they decide to do like Eminem, Jay-Z, Diddy, Kanye West, and even to a smaller extent Wiz Khalifa, Joe Budden and Kid Cudi. Even if you don’t like these artists you have to respect that these artists have created a strong fan base and brands. The fans of these artists truly connect with what these artists are about and just through their music they feel that they actually know these artists personally. A lot of artists out here don’t have that at all. I have listened to projects from certain artists and after it is all over I feel like I still don’t know anything about that person and its crazy because an artist’s music is supposed to be their way to express their feelings and what is really going on in their world. Like anyone who has followed Jay-Z will know that he used to be a drug dealer in Marcy and he has nephews that he treats like his sons. That is something you would only know if you listen to his music. So keep that in mind. The last thing I want to say is when you are creating music and doing anything with your career as an artist keep in mind, how does that affect your brand.
So the moral of this story is in the end if you aren’t making music that is true to you and your fans then in the end you won’t be making any music, and if you don’t believe me ask Wale, smh @ Attention Deficit!
