DJ Ames
You can’t talk about mixtapes in the UK without mentioning DJ Ames. He’s everywhere, and I mean everywhere! From winning awards at the Southern Entertainment Awards (SEA’s), to doing mixtapes with a barrage of UK and USA acts as well as actually representing artists, there is no hating on this mans work ethic. We managed to get him to stop doing a mixtape and do this interview with our resident writer Jonathan Miles!
Hi Ames, thanks for doing this interview. First up, I just wanna ask how did you get into the whole mixtape thing and what was the first mixtape you ever dropped?
I was just basically a DJ that did the club thing but was always a fan of mixtapes from when they actually were released by DJ Clue on cassette, for the younger generation reading this you can’t download cassettes LOL. So yeah basically yeah was always a fan and of the mixtapes and wanted to give it a try myself so I thought why not. The first one I did hmmm it was Baby Sham – Hell Back Vol 2 it was never actually released though and remains that way to this date due to money disputes LOL.
Since then you have worked with a string of artists. Let’s talk Stateside for a minute, what are your most memorable mixes and why?
Its gotta be working with Drama cos he’s like one of my big influences when I first got into mixtapes properly in 07 and I listened to a lot of his stuff so working with him was definatly a plus and also the mixtape was helping out my fellow UK artists aswell.
Okay back home I know you did a fat mix with Big Narstie, who else you repped for?
Quite a few really I'll list em below...
G Frsh
Luke Groome
Young Money
Tusche Costa
Flex The Truth
Sedgli Slim
LATE
Manny Moscow
Bemus
Fathomless 1
Kulez
P Money
Doctor
Luka Bee (RIP Fam)
Stinga Dee
Tneek
There is probably more LOL
So how many mixtapes from you started to July 2009 have you released?
Easily over 200 + I could used to give an exact number but not anymore LOL
WOW! That’s a fair amount! LOL! So what are your plans for the rest of 2009? Anything big dropping that we should be on the look out for?
I got a lot dropping within the next few months. The ones with major artists that are planned at the moment are with Poe Boy artists Brisco & Billy Blue and the new mixtape with Rasheeda – Certfied. Plus im doing a producer series which I'll reveal more about soon. And I cant forget the release with Manny Moscow coming soon aswell so gotta keep flying the UK flag.
You recently did a mixtape with DJ Drama which is a massive look. How did all that come about?
Basically I started networking with the affiliates via myspace and arranged to meet up when I was in the ATL in May, Drama was there but he was busy. So I went back in Sept and Drama was just chillIn on his Mac Book so I chopped things up with him and it went from there.
You won an award in America at something called the SEA Awards? Excuse my ignorance but what’s that all about?
SEA is Southern Entertainment Awards. It's basically one of the biggest underground award shows in the south of the US.
I hear you are really feeling Moka Blast at the moment and are doing some artist management. Is this something you’d like to get more into?
Moka has been my artist since early 07 and we have just gelled really well as DJ and artists and the movement has stayed strong ever since. I have done management and lets just say its not worth the hassle LOL and I have to just concentrate on myself right now.
So how would an artist wanting to do a mixtape with you go about it? Do you charge?
It all depends, I have been charging recently yes and I do actual packages which gives the artists more for their money. They can check out www.myspace.com/djamesuk for more details and prices.
So let’s talk about all the affiliations you got. I hear your a member of a few different mixtape organisations as well as being sponsored?
I have product placements with Stunna Liqour and Hunid Racks and also wearing Third Coast Clothing and im also Coast2Coast DJ & Fleet DJ.
Ames, I am going to let you crack on, I was told by your PR to keep things short as you are a busy man LOL! Before you go is there anything you would like to add?
Appreciate you taking time to interview me. Shouts to Tricksta and the whole Wolftown Roster for the support. The whole Coast2Coast DJs & Fleet DJ’s. So Sincere (My Pr). Third Coast Clothing, Hunid Racks & Stunna Liqour (sponsors). Also Tawag promotions for the support and the best damn artist on the planet Moka Blast!!
Please give us all your web details.
